Open Burning Information

Before you perform an open burn, you must call the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District. This helps us track when open burning is taking place, aiding us in ensuring we’re providing necessary fire protection and communicating with the public about known open burning.

  • Do not burn during Red Flag Warnings and high wind conditions

  • Call the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District at (970) 963-2491 prior to burning each day of your planned burn

  • Do not burn construction materials, treated wood, trash, plastics, tires or anything else that produces toxic smoke

  • Do not burn within 25 feet of any structure

  • Provide a responsible person to attend open burning at all times

  • Provide adequate fire control equipment (shovels, water, fire pumps, etc) on site and available while burning

  • If burning brush piles, keep the piles small

  • Call 911 if the fire gets out of control
