At approximately 1430 on February 1, 2006 CRFPD received a report of a suspicious looking small pipe at the corner of 4th & Main St. in Carbondale. The pipe is located on the Qwest property.

The Police and Fire Department have taken a very cautious and conservative approach to this situation and has in fact shut down Main Street at Weandt and 4th Streets. Further the Incident Commanders have ordered the evacuation of all public buildings on Main Street between Weandt and 4th.

Evacuated persons should probably plan to be out of the building for the next 4 hours. In the meantime the Middle School located at 455 So. 3rd St. has been designated as the emergency relocation center and anyone needing shelter should proceed to that location.

The Grand Junction Bomb Squad has been ordered and is expected to be on scene within the next 90 minutes.

here is no need for alarm from the public at this time and the evacuation is precautionary at this time.

The next press release will be at 1630 hours.

Carbondale Fire Chief
